What changes when an image becomes a vector?

A raster image (PNG, JPG, WebP, GIF) is a fixed grid of pixels. A vector image (SVG, PDF, EPS, DXF) describes shapes as paths: lines and curves with coordinates. Converting from one to the other means rebuilding the shapes hidden in the pixel grid.

Which images are worth vectorizing?

Flat graphics with clear edges — logos, icons, lettering, clip art and line art — trace well, because the boundaries between colours are obvious. Photographs don't: they contain thousands of small colour regions, so a trace comes out posterized, as flat patches of colour.

The quality of the source matters as much as its type. When we traced the same logo two ways, a clean PNG gave 11 paths and a small, compressed JPEG of it gave 821 — every compression artifact became a shape. The full test is in how to fix a traced SVG.

What are the ways to convert an image to a vector?

  1. Redraw it by hand with the pen tool in a vector editor. The most control and the cleanest result, but slow.
  2. Trace it in desktop software. Inkscape (free) has Path ‣ Trace Bitmap (Shift+Alt+B), with modes such as brightness cutoff, edge detection and colour quantization (Inkscape manual). Adobe Illustrator's equivalent is Image Trace.
  3. Trace it in Figma. Figma has a built-in Vectorize command on paid plans; see how to vectorize an image in Figma.
  4. Use an online converter. Image2Vector traces PNG, JPG, WebP and GIF files on our server and sends back an SVG; the image isn't stored. 1 conversion a day is free.

Which vector format should you choose?

Image2Vector exports SVG on every plan, and PDF, EPS and DXF on Pro. If you're unsure, start with SVG.

How do you get a clean result?

  1. Start from the largest, cleanest copy you have. In our test, the clean PNG traced to 11 paths and the small JPEG to 821.
  2. Mind the background. Image2Vector flattens transparent areas onto white, so a Color-mode SVG includes a white background shape. Delete it, or use Black & White mode, which adds none.
  3. Raise Filter Speckle if the source is noisy. On the small JPEG, going from 4 to 16 cut the paths from 821 to 64.
  4. Use Black & White when one colour is enough. It traced that same JPEG as a single path.
  5. Inspect before you download. Zoom the preview up to 40× and flip to the original to compare. On the free plan, every trace counts, so choose the preset before you upload.

Converting images to vectors FAQ

Can I convert a photo into a vector?

You can, but expect a stylized result: photos are traced into flat patches of colour rather than reproduced in detail. Vectorizing suits graphics with clear edges, such as logos and line art.

Is converting an image to a vector free?

It can be. Inkscape is free desktop software with a Trace Bitmap command, and Image2Vector converts 1 image a day free, with no account and no watermark.

Will the vector be editable?

Yes. You can move, recolour and reshape the traced paths in any vector editor. Any text in the image is traced as shapes, not editable text.

Does vectorizing fix a blurry image?

Not by itself: the tracer follows the pixels it's given, so blur and compression artifacts become extra shapes. Start from the sharpest copy you have, and see how to fix a traced SVG for the settings that clean up a noisy trace.
